Luckily, the second of a duology gives the reader a bit of background to bring them up to date before it opens to romantic historical hero William Wallace’s coronation/elevation ceremony to ‘Guardian of Scotland’ and the definite requited love thing with time traveling archival journalist Eva McKay.
On their way to secure Eva before William’s latest campaign, when they’re ambushed and William the warrior succinctly shows Eva why he’s a guardian for his homeland as she wonders how much time they’ll have left before the medallion sends her back to her life. This exciting read dares to weave hope for a different outcome into the commonly known story of William Wallace.
Eva doesn’t stop trying to save the man she loves even though she and the reader know the two of them won’t have a happily ever after surrounded by grandchildren as they die of old age. William is so full of life and fire the reader is inspired to fight with her. The supporting characters have plenty to contribute and are active participants and catalysts of everything going on around them.
Fans of the Outlander series might enjoy this time travelling, historical romantic fiction read. However, the reader should keep in mind this is a historical fiction with romance not a historical romance that should be read in order to best appreciate.
