When Doctor Kelly Malone realizes her bosses are secretly going forward with a project she deemed unsafe, she escapes their clutches with copies of the latest research samples and notes. Now she’s being followed and receiving mysterious calls and emails. Though it’s been years, Kelly goes to the only man she’s ever felt completely safe with.

After an abusive childhood followed by an undistinguished army career ending in PTSD the last thing bear shifter and were club owner, Kyle Frost, expected was his fated mate darkening his door in need of help. Since their parting, trust has been in short supply and Kyle is less than cordial at their meeting.

As a foundation story, there are things to enjoy and plenty of ways to expand the world. Looking ahead, the premise of the co-owned night club opens the door for many other stories beyond the planned trilogy; Kelly’s research lends itself to many possibilities and; some of the supporting characters were interesting enough to want to see more of them.

This reader was intrigued by what could be a new, fun and breezy urban fantasy series. Plus bear shifter! Alas, for my taste, the read fell short of my expectations, I wanted and expected more. This reader would’ve also appreciated less repetition, more intensity in the sometimes muddy plot, direction in the world building and tighter pacing.

The outing easily classifies and works in any combination of contemporary paranormal romantic suspense. However, the threads were a bit too even to determine if the romance or mystery was predominant and too much was left to the reader’s imagination.
